“I don’t think it works like that…” – A Poem by Rowe Williams

They say it's always five o'clock
somewhere.
But generally by somewhere, they still mean
on Earth.

I think we should take a more
interplanetary view.
Perhaps if we consider enough planets,
it can be whenever we want.

I will fly to Mars on Tuesday
and enjoy the weekend there.

Then I can call my mother on
Alpha Centauri Tertius
to find she is giving me birth.

Meanwhile, we learn the Kaiser is plotting
to conquer France via neutral
Belgian space from a few stars away.

Pilgrims travel across the galaxy
to see the Christ
in Holy Crucifixion, but become
too impatient to wait for the empty tomb.

As people travel further out,
further back,
they find where the universe
is being born.

A tourist takes a picture, forgetting
to turn off the flash,
and the photons enter the womb,
and the universe is never the same.

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it. I enjoyed your poem “White Room”. It was pleasantly surreal, and made me think about how sometimes we don’t fit expectations of us, and we don’t really have to.

Thanks. I had a good time writing it. I enjoyed what you wrote in “It’s Not That”. I found it very expressive and relatable.
